Al Gore on Campaign Finance Reform

“…the only thing that matters in American politics now is having enough money to put 30-second commercials on the air often enough to convince the voters to elect you or re-elect you. The person who has the most money to run the most ads usually wins.”

That was the former Vice President yesterday in Scotland. Interesting rhetoric coming from a man that was raising in a DC hotel. It seems like only yesterday when Gore was engaging in highly questionable campaign finance practices while scoring some cash for President Clinton’s re-election. Why was it ok back then? Because, in his words, there was “no controlling legal authority.”

Unfortunately, there still isn’t. Substantive reform has not been achieved and McCain-Feingold, coupled with the Supreme Court’s continued incorrect assertion that money is a form of speech, has transformed our democracy into legislation to the highest bidder. James Madison would be rolling over in his grave.
