Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens has been convicted of lying about free home renovations and other gifts he received from a wealthy oil contractor. The Senate’s longest-serving Republican, Stevens was found guilty on all seven counts of making false statements on Senate financial documents. And you thought Sarah Palin was the most corrupt Republican from Alaska… _She pummeled opponents for giving oil companies and other businesses too much control of state government. Yet she appointed the founder of an engineering firm that received $6.8 million in state business as head of the transportation department. _She has accepted dozens of gifts worth tens of thousands of dollars since taking office, including two free [...] The McCain campaign boasts of her pork-cutting, but up close it looks more like a trim. In her two years as governor, Alaska has requested nearly $750 million in special federal spending, by far the largest per-capita request in the nation. She boasts of rejecting plans to build the notorious “Bridge to Nowhere,” a $389 [...] …or what’s the matter with Alaskan voters? Senator Ted Stevens of Alaska won the Republican primary in his home state on Tuesday, soundly defeating six Republican challengers less than a month after he was indicted by a federal grand jury for concealing more than $250,000 in gifts from an oil services company. |
