Hopefully, the Obama administration will remain serious about reducing our dependence on Mideast oil.

Iraq aims to triple oil exports to six million barrels a day in 10 years, earmarking two billion dollars to start increasing capacity, Finance Minister Baqer Jabr Solagh told AFP.

“We are allocating about two billion dollars (1.6 billion euros) to the oil ministry in the 2009 budget in order to start increasing capacity in this sector,” Solagh said in an interview on Wednesday.

“From my view, we need to increase our exports at least to what they were in the 1980s, when we exported 3.4 million barrels a day,” he said.

Ah, the 1980s…when the United States and Saddam Hussein were allies and trade partners, oil was flowing freely and we stood by while innocent Iraqis were murdered by their own government (the same reason we later determined Hussein was a criminal and should be executed). Yes, freedom is on the march, indeed.

Welcome to Washington Hotlist, the site for serious discussion about this presidential election. For the many of you that are concerned about the way Senator Obama used bad analogies involving lipstick and other such nonsense, feel free to pick up any mainstream media newspaper or turn on the television. With so many serious issues facing this country, there is no doubt that we have been failed miserably by the institutions that are supposed to provide real news to the voters. Instead, everything is gossip and our election process has been transformed into a very drawn out season of American Idol. As George Bush once famously said, “Is Our Children Learning?”

With the above in mind, I am attempting to singlehandedly be the source for serious individuals that actually care about issues and where the candidates stand for you, the voters. Here at Washington Hotlist there will be no talk of Sarah Palin’s children, distorted campaign commercials or any other Wonkette-type nonsense that has engulfed the most consequential election in my lifetime.

Today’s serious topic of the day: the continued meltdown of our economy. Two of our largest investment banks, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch are about to kick the bucket, one to file for bankruptcy and the other to be bought by Bank of America. This is another sign that our federal government has failed to act as a regulator, not surprisingly considering the ideology of those in charge has been that free markets work and regulation is another form of communism. Well, we can all see how well that philosophy has worked. Businesses from the auto industry to financial services are lining up to be bailed out by the federal government.

In other words, your taxpayer dollars are going to save the balance sheets of companies that were recklessly managed while our nation is in debt arount $10 trillion. Maybe regulation isn’t such a bad thing after all and it would be interesting to hear the presidential candidates discuss what role the federal government should have in regulating the markets instead of the nonsense we are forced to listen to on a daily basis. Since oil has dropped from about $145/barrel to $96/barrel in the past 8 weeks, the ridiculous talk of suspending the gas tax and offshore drilling have also stopped, which goes to show you how completely arbitrary those policy positions were.

I hope you have enjoyed a discussion about what is actually going on in this country as opposed to the gossip currently transpiring on mainstream media outlets around the nation. Stay tuned to Washington Hotlist for more talk about boring subjects such as the economy, foreign policy and the Supreme Court (you know, nerdy stuff).

“We all know that a comprehensive solution is wind, tide, solar, all the other things all of us believe in. In the meantime, as we develop all of these alternate sources of energy, it will be vital that we continue oil production at a high level, including offshore drilling.”

Just last month, McCain reversed himself after years of opposition and called for lifting the federal ban on oil drilling off the U.S. coast.

How perfectly does the photo below epitomize the Republican Party? Mr. Campaign Finance Reform desperately needs campaign donations from oil companies to be competitive with Senator Obama which is why he has flip flopped on energy policy. This country desperately needs real campaign finance reform instead of the joke that we call our current policy (drafted of course by Senator McCain).

“Today, I’ve taken every step within my power to allow offshore exploration. This means the only thing standing between the American people and these vast oil resources is action from the U.S. Congress,” President Bush told reporters earlier today.

Setting aside the fact that lifting this ban (smartly instituted by his father) will procedurally accomplish nothing, drilling for more oil does nothing substantively to solve our nation’s energy problems either. Bush himself has said that we are addicted to oil; why would he want us to sustain that addiction by helping us obtain more oil?

For a short term political gain and a temporary mild dip in prices?

The U.S. Energy Department’s forecasting arm has said opening the Pacific, Atlantic and eastern Gulf of Mexico regions to drilling “would not have a significant impact on domestic crude oil and natural gas production or prices before 2030.”

The demand will only continue to increase, policies will not be put into place that will ween us off this addiction and supply will only marginally increase. The worst way to end an addiction is to provide the addict with more of what said addict is addicted to. High has prices will never go away and is something that we are going to have to get used to.

As usual, Bush’s logic is fatally flawed. It’s a good thing Bush is our first President with an MBA; that degree has sure been put to good use with ideas like this one.

President Bush – lame duck since November 2006.
