The biggest flaw with our War on Terror is that we assume giving people the right to vote for their leaders will make them more peaceful. What nonsense. Since Palestinians were given the right to vote, they have elected Hamas as their leadership – a terrorist organization with explicit goals to destroy the State of Israel. Of course, everyone with half of brain knew such a result would occur except for the usually dimwitted Condi Rice and her equally clueless followers at State. Now, we have an Iraqi journalist expressing his newfound freedom of speech by throwing his shoe at President Bush and the only person Bush can blame for this lunacy is himself. Be careful what you wish for, Mr. President. Democracy and First Amendment freedoms are not for everyone. The world is not once size fits all. This is the neocons’ biggest failing among many.

Huckabee Dangerously Blurs Church And State

“The criteria to get into heaven is you have to be not good, but perfect. That’s the real challenge in it. On that day, when I pull up, I’ll be asked, `Do you have what it takes to get in?’ And if I ask, `Well, what does it take to get in?’ ‘Gotta be perfect.’ Well, I’m afraid I don’t have that, but you know what, I won’t be there alone that day. Somebody is going to be with me. His name is Jesus, and he’s promised that he would never leave me or forsake me.”

It would be prudent if presidential candidates refrained from proselytizing on a particular religious faith. Language like this puts our nation on a road to a very dangerous place (which, strangely enough, is what draws so many voters to Mr. Huckabee). The American public needs a better grasp on the history and value of church-state separation or the social and religious progress we have made since our founding will be severely stunted.

Catholic League president Bill Donahue actually said something that makes sense.

Regarding Mike Huckabee:

“What he’s trying to say to the evangelicals in western Iowa (is): I’m the real thing. You know what, sell yourself on your issues, not on what your religion is.”

Do you think Donahue would feel the same way if Huckabee was Catholic?

Romney Gets It Right On Religion

To do so would enable the very religious test the founders prohibited in the Constitution. No candidate should become the spokesman for his faith. For if he becomes president, he will need the prayers of the people of all faiths. When I place my hand on the Bible and take the oath of office, that oath becomes my highest promise to G-d. If I am fortunate to become your president, I will serve no one religion, no one group, no one cause and no one interest. A president must serve only the common cause of the people of the United States. It is important to recognize that, while differences in theology exist between the churches in America, we share a common creed of moral convictions.”

On The Way Down:

R – Mitt Romney
D – Hillary Clinton

It is going to be a very interesting month. The negative campaigning has already begun to increase exponentially and figures to get much worse in the days ahead.

Huckabee’s rise, particularly with religious voters, has lead to the need for an explanation from Romney about his religion, a development that I find utterly appalling and un-American. Article VI, Section 3 of the Constitution explicitly prohibits religious tests for office yet Republican voters apply it with pride.

There will never be true equality in this country when such a voluminous and influential bloc of the voting public provides preferential treatment for evangelical Christians to the detriment of every other religious sect.
