Instead of telling us what they would do in the White House to improve the lives of Americans, the McCain-Palin dynamic duo spent another day (thankfully there are only six days left of this neverending nightmare) telling Americans what a dangerous and bad person Barack Obama is because in 2003 he attended a party for Columbia professor. Yes, those liberal elites love college professors! They can’t be from real America! Palin claims the professor is a former spokesman for the PLO, not realizing the irony of running for vice president with a man that advocated for policies which have significantly strengthened Iraq’s ties with Iran, while also admitting that Iran is certainly a more dangerous threat to America than the Palestinians. Thinking logically about issues has never been a character trait of this ticket.

Of course, most Americans are preoccupied with the fact that the stock market dropped again today, housing prices continue to slump, consumer confidence is at record lows and we want a government that will do something about this, not be obsessed with who Barack Obama met a couple times years ago. Besides, this “news” is five years old. If Obama’s character is such an issue, why did they wait so long to bring this up?

John McCain and Sarah Palin could care less about what Americans need. Instead, they care about irrelevent things that Barack Obama did years ago and dividing Americans into us and them. It’s really a sad display of desperation and a book that keeps writing itself – “How Not To Run A Presidential Campaign.”

Did you hear the one about Obama being a Muslim? But, I thought he attended a church for years that employed an anti-American reverend. Since when do Muslims have reverends? The Republican ticket can’t even keep their nonsense straight anymore.

Not Randy Scheunemann, Mr. McCain’s chief foreign policy adviser; not Nicolle Wallace, his senior communications staffer. It was Amy Strozzi, who was identified by the Washington Post this week as Gov. Sarah Palin’s traveling makeup artist, according to a new filing with the Federal Election Commission on Thursday night.

Ms. Strozzi, who was nominated for an Emmy award for her makeup work on the television show “So You Think You Can Dance?”, was paid $22,800 for the first two weeks of October alone, according to the records. The campaign categorized Ms. Strozzi’s payment as “Personnel Svc/Equipment.”

Your taxpayer dollars hard at work. Remember, Senator McCain opted for public financing, which means you and I just paid for Sarah Palin’s hair and designer clothes. This from the candidate that promises to cut wasteful spending in Washington.

Governor Palin claims to be an average, ordinary American while she expenses her children’s travel and hotel stays to the citizens of Alaska and rings up six-digit shopping bills in a few weeks.

Welcome to Washington Hotlist, the site for serious discussion about this presidential election. For the many of you that are concerned about the way Senator Obama used bad analogies involving lipstick and other such nonsense, feel free to pick up any mainstream media newspaper or turn on the television. With so many serious issues facing this country, there is no doubt that we have been failed miserably by the institutions that are supposed to provide real news to the voters. Instead, everything is gossip and our election process has been transformed into a very drawn out season of American Idol. As George Bush once famously said, “Is Our Children Learning?”

With the above in mind, I am attempting to singlehandedly be the source for serious individuals that actually care about issues and where the candidates stand for you, the voters. Here at Washington Hotlist there will be no talk of Sarah Palin’s children, distorted campaign commercials or any other Wonkette-type nonsense that has engulfed the most consequential election in my lifetime.

Today’s serious topic of the day: the continued meltdown of our economy. Two of our largest investment banks, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch are about to kick the bucket, one to file for bankruptcy and the other to be bought by Bank of America. This is another sign that our federal government has failed to act as a regulator, not surprisingly considering the ideology of those in charge has been that free markets work and regulation is another form of communism. Well, we can all see how well that philosophy has worked. Businesses from the auto industry to financial services are lining up to be bailed out by the federal government.

In other words, your taxpayer dollars are going to save the balance sheets of companies that were recklessly managed while our nation is in debt arount $10 trillion. Maybe regulation isn’t such a bad thing after all and it would be interesting to hear the presidential candidates discuss what role the federal government should have in regulating the markets instead of the nonsense we are forced to listen to on a daily basis. Since oil has dropped from about $145/barrel to $96/barrel in the past 8 weeks, the ridiculous talk of suspending the gas tax and offshore drilling have also stopped, which goes to show you how completely arbitrary those policy positions were.

I hope you have enjoyed a discussion about what is actually going on in this country as opposed to the gossip currently transpiring on mainstream media outlets around the nation. Stay tuned to Washington Hotlist for more talk about boring subjects such as the economy, foreign policy and the Supreme Court (you know, nerdy stuff).

She’s Not Ready
By BOB HERBERT
Published: September 12, 2008

“While watching the Sarah Palin interview with Charlie Gibson Thursday night, and the coverage of the Palin phenomenon in general, I’ve gotten the scary feeling, for the first time in my life, that dimwittedness is not just on the march in the U.S., but that it might actually prevail.

How is it that this woman could have been selected to be the vice presidential candidate on a major party ticket? How is it that so much of the mainstream media has dropped all pretense of seriousness to hop aboard the bandwagon and go along for the giddy ride?

For those who haven’t noticed, we’re electing a president and vice president, not selecting a winner on “American Idol.”

Ms. Palin may be a perfectly competent and reasonably intelligent woman (however troubling her views on evolution and global warming may be), but she is not ready to be vice president.

With most candidates for high public office, the question is whether one agrees with them on the major issues of the day. With Ms. Palin, it’s not about agreeing or disagreeing. She doesn’t appear to understand some of the most important issues.

“Do you believe in the Bush doctrine?” Mr. Gibson asked during the interview. Ms. Palin looked like an unprepared student who wanted nothing so much as to escape this encounter with the school principal.

Clueless, she asked, “In what respect, Charlie?”

“Well, what do you interpret it to be?” said Mr. Gibson.

“His worldview?” asked Ms. Palin.

Later, in the spin zones of cable TV, commentators repeatedly made the point that there are probably very few voters — some specifically mentioned “hockey moms” — who could explain the Bush doctrine. But that’s exactly the reason we have such long and intense campaigns. You want to find the individuals who best understand these issues, who will address them in sophisticated and creative ways that enhance the well-being of the nation.

The Bush doctrine, which flung open the doors to the catastrophe in Iraq, was such a fundamental aspect of the administration’s foreign policy that it staggers the imagination that we could have someone no further than a whisper away from the White House who doesn’t even know what it is.

You can’t imagine that John McCain or Barack Obama or Joe Biden or Hillary Clinton or Joe Lieberman would not know what the Bush doctrine is. But Sarah Palin? Absolutely clueless.

Ms. Palin’s problem is not that she was mayor of a small town or has only been in the Alaska governor’s office a short while. Her problem (and now ours) is that she is not well versed on the critical matters confronting the country at one of the most crucial turning points in its history.

The economy is in a tailspin. The financial sector is lurching about on rubbery legs. We’re mired in self-defeating energy policies. We’re at war. And we are still vulnerable to the very real threat of international terrorism.

With all of that and more being the case, how can it be a good idea to set in motion the possibility that Americans might wake up one morning to find that Sarah Palin is president?

I feel for Ms. Palin’s son who has been shipped off to the war in Iraq. But at his deployment ceremony, which was on the same day as the Charlie Gibson interview, Sept. 11, she told the audience of soldiers that they would be fighting “the enemies who planned and carried out and rejoiced in the death of thousands of Americans.”

Was she deliberately falsifying history, or does she still not know that Iraq and Saddam Hussein had nothing to do with the Sept. 11 attacks?

To burnish the foreign policy credentials of a vice presidential candidate who never even had a passport until last year, the Republicans have been touting Alaska’s proximity to Russia. (Imagine the derisive laughter in conservative circles if the Democrats had tried such nonsense.) So Mr. Gibson asked Ms. Palin, “What insight into Russian actions, particularly in the last couple of weeks, does the proximity of the state give you?”

She said, “They’re our next-door neighbors. And you can actually see Russia from land here in Alaska. From an island in Alaska.”

Mr. Gibson tried again. “But what insight does that give you,” he asked, “into what they’re doing in Georgia?”

John McCain, who is shameless about promoting himself as America’s ultimate patriot, put the best interests of the nation aside in making his incredibly reckless choice of a running mate. But there is a profound double standard in this country. The likes of John McCain and George W. Bush can do the craziest, most irresponsible things imaginable, and it only seems to help them politically.”
Bob Herbert has it right: We should be afraid. VERY afraid.
