I’m getting tired of writing about this, really I am. Many Americans yearn for an alternative to the corruption and hubris associated with the two major parties and the rules keep getting written to prevent this from occuring. So, we are forced to fend for ourselves and decide which party we want in power – the Evil Party (a/k/a Republicans) or the Stupid Party (a/k/a Democrats). Both have their pros and cons (mostly cons), but I would rather pay higher taxes than be spied upon in the privacy of my own home, so I do prefer the Democrats by a hair in the upcoming elections.
But, the more I try to get excited about the prospects of Speaker Nancy Pelosi or Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat finds a way to remind me that I would be better off voting for the Constitution Party (at least their name suggests that they might be familiar with more than the Second Amendment). Let’s take the case of Missouri Attorney General Jay Nixon.
Notwithstanding the awful and immediate associations his last name must bring to any career in politics, the Democratic Nixon is seeking the governorship of the Show Me State. One would think that a reasonable person in his position would refrain from accepting nearly $20,000 in campaign contributions that originated with a utility (Ameren Corp.) he is investigating over a disastrous reservoir collapse.
I mean, if anyone should know the laws, it’s the Attorney General. In an interview, Nixon acknowledged that his campaign had received money that originated with Ameren. But he said the contributions will not influence his investigation. Right. Is it not obvious to the entire world that returning the money would be the most logical and ethical thing to do? I guess politicians don’t do common sense.
