But not these Republicans:

Odd that these flag-waving hypocrites, who claim to be the “true American patriots,” DID NOT SERVE IN THE MILITARY!!!
OK….let’s wind this partisan nonsense out a tad further just for the hell of it. How many of your Democrats, in that you found it necessary to separate them out, can boast the distinction of having been a POW, or had their aircraft shot out from under them like Bush 41 or JM? As for Charley Rangel, Adam Clayton Powell’s protege, yep!, there’s a ‘real’ hero for ya!!
This thread is about Veterans Day, and I separated out our political leaders because YOU inserted John McCain into the conversation, and I’m sick of watching Republicans wrap themselves in the flag and claim that only THEY are the true patriots, and that anyone who disagrees with them is a traitor who doesn’t love this country.
I was also sickened by the audacity of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney – who sent over 4,000 brave Americans to their death in Iraq – to strut their way through the wreath ceremony at Arlington yesterday. It was obscene.
It’s your childish response that has introduced “partisan nonsense†into this thread, so just for the hell of it, let’s try some grown-up logic…the kind you’re obviously unfamiliar with:
Being a POW and getting shot down are rare occurrences that happen to only a few in the military and that are beyond the control of anyone. THEY ARE ACCIDENTS OF COMBAT.
Max Cleland lost three limbs in the Vietnam War. Tammy Duckworth lost both her legs in Iraq. I doubt that either one of them “boasts†of those distinctions, but by your twisted reasoning, you would criticize and penalize all those soldiers who were fortunate to avoid those accidents.
Do you see the insanity – and inanity – of that point of view?
And while we’re talking about military service, Charley Rangel fought in Korea and was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
Sounds like a hero to me.
The thrust of my post still stands. Many of the most prominent Democrats DID serve their country, while many prominent Republicans — including the ones who beat their chests the loudest about “patriotism†— DID NOT.
You certainly take the liberty of reading an awful lot into what I’ve written. As far as Rangel is concerned. his service is to be commended, but he’s no political Boy Scout, by any stretch of the imagination. As I said, he was mentored well.

There’s no other way to interpret the first part of that statement except as a claim that Bush 41 and McCain had unique military experiences, and if no Democrats had been captured or shot down, they (the Democrats) were less patriotic.
How is my response of 11/12 “reading an awful lot†into what you wrote? What else could you have meant?

Yes. they did have unique military experiences, it separates them from the rest, partisanship notwithstanding….the rest of the conclusion you draw is your own.
As far as ‘political boy scouts are concerned’ we don’t need a census. To expand on that, regardless of who it may be, any military service they may have done diminishes in direct proportion to their abuse of power.

I drew my conclusion from what you wrote.
Of course you’d say we don’t need a census of “political boy scouts” because your party’s numbers are an embarrassment.
So you sidestep the question of party ethics by hiding behind military service, where, as I’ve pointed out, the Republicans are also an embarrassment, having generally avoided that responsibility too.
Let’s see…military service…ethics…there’s just nowhere to hide, is there?

I didn’t create this as a partisan issue. I simpley cited John McCain in that he was a person of the moment. You are drawing the inferences not I. (I personally have no party affiliations and voted as an Independent.) I have always maintained that there are abuses on both sides and you must be aware that through all of these months I have continued to maintain that there is a general sense of contempt for the electorate on the part of individuals who practice politics.
(Now though I do not get the impression that this is true for Obama I am still cognizant of the very careful analytical process which went into determining the course of his campaigning and this is, in its own right, a kind of purposefully designed behavior modification. We have four years within which to witness whether or not he can be all things to all those who supported him.)
For the purposes of further discussions, Jello can be nailed to the wall if it placed in a sturdy container. In that I refuse to be so contained, therein lies the source of the problem.
