Straight Talkers Don’t Stand A Chance

November 30, 2007 – 5:48 pm

The latest examples:

1.) the Governor of New Mexico - Bill Richardson

“Look at the last twelve months. Not only are we still in Iraq, we still have the failure called No Child Left Behind. We still have 9 million children with no health insurance. We’re still allowing this president to thumb his nose at the Bill of Rights. We’re slipping into a recession. And we can’t even reject an attorney general who refuses to condemn torture.”

2.) the former Senator from North Carolina and 2004 Vice Presidential Nominee - John Edwards

“The American people are on the outside. And on the other side, on the inside, are the powerful, the well-connected and the very wealthy…The truth is that it’s not just Republicans who built this wall. Democrats helped. Too many politicians from both parties are choosing self-preservation over principle, compromise over convictions.”

3.) the Senator from Delaware - Joseph Biden

“Before a Democrat can lead, he or she must get elected. We know the Republican playbook. They’ll say we’re weak. They’ll play on people’s fears, not their hopes. Ask yourself: Who do you want in the ring to take their best shots and then give it back, better, harder, and faster than they gave it?”

  2. Three very impressive candidates.

In fact, the entire Democratic field is easily the best in my lifetime, and I’m confident that any one of them would put the focus back on ordinary Americans — those who don’t have health care and who are struggling to make ends meet.

That would represent a welcome change from the current administration — captives of Big Oil, Big Pharma, Big EVERYTHING — who have sold our government to the highest bidder for the past seven years.

But while I’m encouraged by the quality of these candidates, and would feel comfortable with any one of them in the White House, I don’t have nearly the same confidence in the American voter.

Too many are ill-informed and easily-manipulated, and can once again fall victim to the Republican attack machine that will surely call into question the patriotism of the Democratic candidate and prey on voters’ fears.

I’m also afraid that Justice John Paul Stevens, who, at 87, is one of four liberals on the Court, may not survive the next four years, and will need to be replaced by the next president.

To retain some balance on the Court, and for the sake of our country, it’s vital that a Democrat makes that appointment.

  3. Well Steve…..the sentiments you express in pp.#3
have been kicked around this column many times in as many past months, haven’t they. Now you and Joshua had best get busy finding a way to motivate the masses to change their ways of procrastination and sloth before the primaries.

Kinda tough when the ‘late nights’ are running in the same time slot as Charlie Rose or Tavist Smiley.

    Hard choices!!
