The Final Nail In Thompson’s Coffin

December 4, 2007 – 12:45 pm

“As far as faith is concerned, I have not made any secret as to where I am. I am a Christian. I have no apologies to make about my religion or my relationship to Jesus Christ or G-d. I’m OK with the Lord, and the Lord is OK with me, as far as I can tell.”

- Fred Thompson responding to concerns from Christian conservatives that he does not express his religious beliefs enough on the campaign trail

  2. Religion is the least of Thompson’s problems.

His candidacy was dead on arrival anyway.

In fact, the performance of this ultimate “empty suit” has led many to wonder if Fred himself was still alive.

  3. This just in:

Thanks to a late surge, Mitt Romney has pulled even with Fred Thompson in the all-important battle for the title of “Ultimate Empty Suit.”

The smart money, however, is on Romney to eventually win this contest. He has more money to spend than Thompson and can therefore make a stronger case for himself among the voters.

In this race, familiarity will surely breed contempt.

  4. I try to imagine the fundamentalist Christian response to a candidate who had the courage to say,
“I have no religion, but I believe in God. What I believe about such is none of your business, and has no place in the execution of my duties as a servant of the people.”

I think a lot of those ‘Christians’ would want to shoot him.

  5. Vince,

I try to imagine the response to a candidate who says:

“I believe in the biblical precept that we should love thy neighbor as thyself. That is why I support equal rights for all Americans: gay, straight, black, white, male and female.”

I think a lot of those Christians would be speechless.
