In today’s news conference, our cowardly Washington press corps once again gave a pass to President Bush by failing to question him about the administration’s most serious violations of public trust and its assault on the Constitution: The refusal of White House aides to comply with Senate subpoenas on the government’s wiretapping program…the Pentagon’s misplacing of 190,000 weapons in Iraq…the questionable performance of Alberto Gonzales…the commutation of Scooter Libby’s sentence.
The press – supposedly our “guardians of democracy – continues to guard only their own necks. Instead of pressing this president to explain his administration’s actions, they continue to roll over in disgusting displays of obsequious deference.
Four years ago, their dereliction of duty enabled Bush to drag us into the Iraq morass. Today, their complicity allows the administration to continue to violate the law and ignore the Constitution.
They are a disgrace to their profession.
