What’s Wrong With This Picture?
November 19, 2007 – 11:48 amHOMESTEAD, Fla. –As pit crews made last-minute inspections to their cars Sunday at NASCAR’s Ford 400 at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani stressed the need for America to break its dependence on foreign oil.
Giuliani likened the pursuit of energy independence and the development of alternative energy sources to the race to put a man on the moon several decades ago.
“Now it’s a matter truly of national security,” Giuliani said. “We have to pursue all of those alternatives that exist.”
In the meantime, Giuliani said, the U.S. needs to focus on domestic sources of oil, as well as oil from friendly countries like Mexico and Canada. He said conservation also will have to play a role.
Giuliani attended the season-ending race with his wife, Judith.
“This is our third one this year, so now I feel like I really am a fan,” Giuliani said to a tent full of drivers and their crews. “It really represents the very best of America. You should be very proud of where you’ve taken it and where it’s going to go.”
Just before the race, Giuliani and his wife took a lap around the track in the official pace truck.
“I’ve ridden in the car twice at the beginning, and now Judith is going to ride with me,” Giuliani said.
Rudy admonishes us to become energy-independent, but cynically shows up at a NASCAR event, where dozens of cars race around a track at over 100 miles per hour, making left turns for 400 miles while burning thousands of gallons of precious fuel.
In pandering to NASCAR voters, “America’s Mayor” (!) has just given new meaning to the word “hypocrisy.”

Steve,
You read my mind (and beat me to the post). The irony of the former mayor of a liberal northeastern city advocating for energy independence at a NASCAR event had me admiring Mr. Giuliani for approaching new levels of “laugh out loud” funny. I still can not see Republicans nominating a pro-choice, pro-gay rights candidate as their party’s nominee. The next 2.5 months are going to be very interesting on the GOP side.

If Hillary’s poll numbers translate into primary victories and she wins the nomination, I think the GOP will turn to Rudy as the best bet to beat her.
And I’m afraid they’re right.
He’s a formidable campaigner and she’s got too much negative baggage.
A Giuliani presidency scares the hell out of me.
He’d be like Bush on steroids.

What scares me is how often image triumphs over substance in U.S. politics. Ronald Reagan perfected the art of the photo-op– seems Giuliani has been taking lessons.
Giuliani is a real creep, and not least for how he’s treated his ex-wife and his kids.

Hey Vince: You wonder at that “Twenty Mule Team
Mistique” also! From Boraxo and refrigerators to
world’s center stage. Only thing that puzzles me is why Bonzo never rated a cabinet appointment. Guess they found another chimp more qualified.

D__, Reagan never went to a Cabinet meeting he couldn’t fall asleep at.
Giuliani as President would be beholden to the same corporate paymasters as the present administration, so we could expect an intensified evisceration of environmental laws and the very rule of law itself.
